Key Takeaways

• The more dynamically you move your body, the more potential there is for injury. It is important to master the foundations of how to do an exercise correctly prior to adding intensity or weight.

• Many trainers at gyms and group fitness classes focus on goals like weight loss and will not put as much time into training people how to do the movements correctly.

• A person’s body type and weight do not necessarily reflect their health or level of fitness.

How can you unlock your body’s full potential? In today’s episode Dr. Andrew talks with Lizzy Wolterbeek, owner of Embodied Movement Training Systems in Centennial, Colorado about using movement to unlock the full potential of the body. Lizzy has experience not only in training, but also has personal experience coming from a weight lifting background and having spent much of her younger years fighting an eating disorder. These experiences have helped her to create a space that focuses not on weight loss goals like a large majority of trainers, but instead on rehabilitative and injury preventative movement and overall wellness goals.

In a group setting or a fitness class with a weight loss focus, there can often be not enough time spent on preparing the body properly for intense movement. When you go to those classes, you expect to feel sore and exhausted, so you may not even realize that you are doing an exercise incorrectly and causing harm to your body. When those same exercises are done properly, they can be very beneficial to your body, but first you must learn the foundations. By learning how to correctly move your body with a personal trainer like Lizzy beforehand, you can get a lot more out of fitness classes and be much less likely to injure yourself.

Your body has the potential to do incredible things and propel you toward your fitness goals, but only if you take care of yourself properly. If you do not eat right and get enough sleep prior to exercising the next day, you will likely hurt yourself. Similarly, if you do not learn the correct form for an exercise or spend time stretching and preparing your body, or amp up the intensity or weight too quickly, you may hurt rather than help yourself.

Quotes

• “We take the time to look at how you move before we have you move intensely and with weight.” (29:42-29:48 | Lizzy)

• “They want to continue to go to one of those group classes. And I say, go ahead, but let’s spend the time in here really nailing down all of the stuff that you’re not getting there.” (35:11-35:19 | Lizzy)

• “If you’re not executing it well, it’s not a good movement. It could actually be a harmful movement.” (38:11-38:14 | Lizzy)

• “There’s no one body type for any situation. And how you look does not necessarily correlate to your level of health.” (51:15-51:24 | Lizzy)

“Dig deep. And then, you will find something that you didn’t know existed.” – Becki Lynn Bauer

Becki Lynn is an avid runner who got into running during junior high and high school; starting with cross country and picking up recreational running habits. Being an easy, cheap and popular sport to get into, Colorado native Becki easily found a love for the sport among Denver’s many beautiful trails.

Her first marathon was the Kauai Marathon in 2009; the inaugural year for this Hawaii race. “I didn’t know what I was in for, but I came in second overall female.” said Becki Lynn. She got bit by the “running bug” then, and returned the following year to win first place for the female division at the Kauai Marathon.

Just last year in 2021, Becki Lynn ran a race that was 257 miles. Once she found the sport that she excels at, she “ran” with it and never looked back.

After training to run her first Leadville ultramarathon of 100 miles in 2013, she ran the Leadman series in 2014; consisting of a trail marathon, 50-mile bike or run, 100-mile mountain bike ride, 10K, and 100-mile trail race all in the span of a few weeks during the summer. Not to mention this is all done at a 9,200 to 12,620 elevation!

Becki Lynn’s mindset after running the Leadman 100 three times was, “Why not go back and do it better? That was really my mindset. I can do so much better.”

As a serial marathon runner, Becki Lynn knows all the tricks of the trade. Between consistent training, proper hydration, and even the right footwear, there are lots of aspects to endurance running. Although it may seem tempting to miss a training session or ease up on nutrition, if accomplishing this goal is important to you, you will be able to dig deep enough to succeed.

Becki Lynn learned to plan for anything and everything, how to prepare her mind and body for strenuous marathons, races and activities, timing her sleep patterns, and achieving her goal of always improving her time and excelling at the sport that she loves.

She persisted through setbacks during her running journey, and kept training to run every single race that she strived to. She says, “Don’t give up hope. If that’s your goal, don’t give it up. If it means something to you, you’ll find a way.”

Is there a goal that you are passionate about reaching? Are you committed to reaching this goal and navigating the rough waters and obstacles that will present themselves along the way?

If you set your mind to accomplishing a goal, whether it be that dream marathon or an achievement in your everyday life, don’t quit. It’s easier said than done, but the win is yours for the taking.

Want to hear more about Becki Lynn’s running journey and how YOU can run in the direction of your goals? Listen to her episode on The Code Podcast below.
